The gill, Korean novel review
"I love you by not caring you."
From Hogoblin(Korean drama)
Despite confusing, historical situation that ancient Korea was the place of fighting among aristocrats, the King didn't show affection to his brother. Rather, he was excluding his brother. But it was reversal expression to show his affection. What an irony.
As a spoiler of the narrative of "The Gill", Kangha hates Gone and Gone was grown by himself without any attention. Because of Gone's spectacular, weird physical characteristic which Gone has gilis to breathe in the water, he could not be opened to villagers and be regarded as a mysterious guy. Gone is a kind of fishman which can live both in the airy places and watery places. So his scales are shown glittering according to the direction of sun is moving as the time goes by. The gili became the main reason why Kangha hated Gone. The motive source which Kangha tortured Gone was coming from jealousy. He was so jealous that he sweared at Gone excessively to protect his esteem. He was envious of his particular sense and his beautiful skin which seems like scales. Ironically, they depended on each other. The relationship like the conqueror and servant is possible because of the lack of infrastructure to believe in. The background of their lives were nearby lake, so their connecting line should be the lake and Kangha made Gone's lifestyle by giving pressure to swim at the lake. Whether it was torture or care coming from envy feeling, Kangha loved Gone.
The killing point which the affection of Gone is revealed is "I really hate you, but I still want you to survive from this miserable situation." Kangha saved Gone from the dangerous moment which Gone could be driven into a murderer. He had cared Gone by rejecting approach toward Gone from villagers, but this time, his love was revealed by releasing him from hideous lake-based town. This moment is so symbolic that Kangha admitted himself that he thought Gone as a family. That day when his mother was dead, they become literally family.
Their relationship is circular. Now, somewhere, Gone is looking for Kangha who is assumed as a dead person. Kangha released him, but their invisible bond is looking for each other. The gill, his special skill would be a kind of censor to find out his bloodily- unconnected sibling. Tell me. Do you think they are loving each other or hating each other. None of them? Then, what word can define their relationship?
